Few institutions have a more profound and lasting effect on families than Family Law. Almost 50% of children will experience divorce by the time they turn 18. Divorce is often rated as more stressful than a death in the family because the financial and emotional/physical effects of divorce can last a lifetime.
After being subject to the jurisdiction of Family Law for 10 years, it is still amazing how easy it is to find similar horror stories from friends and families about it. Yet most people accept the status quo – often because Family Law continues to be shrouded in secrecy despite the vast amounts of data available on every aspect of our life. Even if people don’t accept the status quo, people can’t agree on the best way to make it work for children.
After my last child support modification in 2016 in which I spent $11,000 in attorney/court fees, I decided that I needed to something about it. In 2017, I founded Georgia Family Law Reform (GFLR) as a non-profit organization with the purpose of educating people about about Family Law and what should be fixed.
